Here’s what’s happening in worship this week.
Worship Services
Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Revisit the Journey. The Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach from Acts 9:1–19.
Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach. His sermon will be entitled “Saving Salvation: Too Much Blood,” based on John 17:18–24.
Taizé | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead worship. This week’s after-Taizé class will feature an extended time of prayer and singing.
Christian Education Classes
We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.
Faith 101 | McKelvy Room
This week, Jan Irvin will lead our Lenten series, Faith 101. This week’s lesson will be Salvation: Abundant Life Now. Are we willing to wake up to the possibility that the 25,550 days we have are actually the main course?
Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
Join us as we being a three-week series on Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, teachings, and prophecies. The series will consider the early influences and choices that turned Dr. Martin Luther King into a modern-day prophet. We will examine Dr. King’s prophetic calls for justice to be done, echoing the Biblical message of God’s care for the poor and outcasts of society.
This week, Carolyn Russ leads our lesson, How Can We Cross Barriers to Make Connections?, and discuss how King learned to build community with people of different backgrounds and attitudes.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit (Psalm 51:12). Restoration, joy, salvation, sustenance, willingness, and spirit; all these are for the asking—gifts of God in Christ for all. The Lenten readings for March can nourish us and witness to these gifts. Drop in and join us on the journey.
This week, Paul Seif will lead us through our readings, which include Exodus 20:1–17; Psalm 19; 1 Corinthians 1:18–25; and John 2:13–22.
Seekers | Room 234
In 1942, C. S. Lewis’ Christian apologetic novel, Screwtape Letters, was published. Written as an exchange of correspondence between senior Demon Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter, this satirical novel explores many Christian theological issues, such as temptation and resistance to it, faith, and theodicy. Pastor Heather will discuss this text and the theological themes it addresses.
Soul Food | Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room
We will continue discussing our Lenten text, Wondrous Encounters—Scripture for Lent, by Richard Rohr. New participants are always welcome!
