Contemporaries | McKelvy Room
How to Pray
On this first Sunday of Lent, the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead our class on an exploration of the various ways to pray and help us identify the best way for each of us to enter into a closer relationship with God during this holy season.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven.”—Psalm 32:1
Happiness consists of a willingness to share in God’s joy in dispensing salvation through forgiveness. A joint partnership with risk and rewards! To let go of hurts, to accept oneself, to love the lost, even reckless. Come join us this Lent to reflect on unbounded forgiveness and joy embodied.
Join us for this week’s readings: Deuteronomy 26:1–11; Psalm 91:1–2, 9-16; Romans 10:8b–13; and Luke 4:1–13.
Seekers | Garth Overlook Room
The Black Panther Party of the 1960s
In the 1960s, the Black Panther movement was under surveillance by the U.S. government, including the FBI, and considered to be a possible threat to our society. What were the truths about the movement? T. Rashad Byrdsong will tell us about his experience as part of the Black Panther party and help us separate truth from fiction. T. Rashad Byrdsong is founder and CEO of the Community Empowerment Association in Homewood.
Soul Food | Good Samaritan Room (G12)
We will continue and conclude our discussion of selections from Meditations of the Heart by Howard Thurman, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Steve Evrard, and Judy Roberts.
Additional information about Thurman and African-American spirituality will be provided from Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church, by Barbara Holmes. New participants are always welcome and books are quickly available.
Young Adults | Room 213
REgret, REalize, REassurance, REsurrection
All young adults are welcome to join us for a series examining these subjects within the Bible, our own faith journeys and experiences, and the world around us.
