Here’s what’s happening in worship this week.
Worship Services
Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Joy. Pastor Randy will preach from Genesis 11:1–9. Communion will be celebrated.
Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Heather will preach from Acts 2:14–21 and her sermon will be titled, “Why are We Here?” Communion will be celebrated and we will receive the Pentecost Offering. Everyone is invited to wear red or colorful clothes as we we rejoice in the Spirit’s energizing, fiery presence in our lives. Our Confirmation Class also will be received as adult members of our church.
Taizé Stations of the Cross | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead this service of sung Taizé prayer. Stay afterward for Contemplative Prayer.
Christian Education Classes
We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.
Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
Faith Formation in the Midst of a Consumerist Age
A consumerist lifestyle, based on “expect more, pay less,” often conflicts with our Christian faith formation and mission. Scott Hagley, assistant professor of missiology at PTS, will help us discover and cultivate a more gracious, joyful alternative way of life.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“The Lord is king! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne”—Psalm 97:1–2. How is God so obscured yet so transparent? And how does the risen Lord assure the church of the continual presence and rule of this just God in a violent world? How do we gauge any leadership? Join us in May as we read Scripture and ponder such questions.
This week, Jan Irvin will lead us. Our readings are: Acts 2:1–21; Psalm 104:24–34, 35b; Romans 8:14–17; and John 14:8–17, 25–27.
Seekers | Room 234
Wonderful and Horrible: Experiencing the Holy Land from a Palestinian Perspective
Mark Blank, our intern from PTS, will discuss his recent trip to Israel/Palestine, where he visited the Holy sites, met Palestinian Christians, and found hope for a just peace.
Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
This week, Joe Hajdu, Michele Bossers, and Barb Fotta will lead a discussion of a daily meditation by Fr. Richard Rohr. Printed copies will be provided.
Young Adults | Pastor’s Conference Room
During our final session in our series on personal stories of faith, hope, love, and liberation, we will share our own stories and experiences, while reflecting upon them, their biblical relevance, and their meanings for our own lives.
