Worship Services
Journey Worship | Sunday, 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Re-Building. Pastor Heather will preach from Psalm 51:1–2, 10–17.
Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Randy will preach from Jonah 3:10–4:11 and his sermon will be titled “Big Themes, Little Books: Praying for Nineveh.”
We also will lift up our partnership with Casa San José and other opportunities to care for the immigrant community in Pittsburgh.
If you’re out of town and/or unable to join us for worship, follow us on Facebook to receive a notification when we go live so that you can watch this week’s sermon.
Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.
Christian Education Classes
We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.
Contemporaries | McKelvy Room
Theology for Presbyterians: Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit anointed the disciples and crowds after Jesus’ ascent to heaven, giving birth to the Church. Today, we profess the Holy Spirit inspires and guides us still. How does the Holy Spirit empower the Church today? Pastor Randy will lead our discussion.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”—Job 42:3
Our readings continue exploring the wisdom tradition in scripture. After contending with friends and God through a period of extensive suffering, Job lets go of some traditional perceptions about God. Radical new images of God and a far richer multipolar world emerge. Likewise, our world passes away—the new can emerge. Join us on this journey.
Join us for this week’s readings: Job 42:1–6, 10–17; Psalm 34:1–8 (19–22); Hebrews 7:23–28; and Mark 10:46–52.
Seekers | Garth Overlook Room
Pagans, Jews, and Christians in the Roman Empire: How and Why Did Christianity Triumph? | Part 1
In traditional histories of Western culture, the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire is understood as a triumph over Judaism and paganism that happened rapidly across the great expanse of the Roman Empire. The reasons for this often claim that the many gods of the time had a proclivity to get angry on a whim, and the absence of true spirituality and social morality in these other beliefs. Renewed methods of research, archaeological discoveries, and the elimination of Christian bias from history books show that there is no historical evidence for those claims.
This week, our topic is: The Conversion of Constantine and the Christianizing of the Roman Empire.
Soul Food | Good Samaritan Room (G12)
We will begin discussing chapter four of Surrender to Love by David Benner, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Yamuna Morgenstern, David Carl, and Katlyn Dougherty.
