There are many small things you can do to save energy during the winter months. Most of them will save energy in the summer, too. Here is a short list:
Turn it Off | Turn off all lights and electronics when they are not in use. If you are going away on vacation, unplug your electronics and appliances.
Use Power Strips | If you have multiple electronics or appliances that require an electrical outlet, plug them into a power strip. When they are not in use, you can switch them all off at once.
Lower your Thermostat | Some people say wearing a hat indoors reduces heat loss and helps them feel comfortable at lower temperatures.
Be a Star | When buying appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR® label—it details energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Make Laundry Efficient | Wash your clothes in cold water and hang them to dry. Clothes hung on racks indoors help to humidify dry, heated air in cold months and also save fossil fuels that are needed for mechanical drying!
Plant a Tree | Rather than giving traditional gifts to your relatives, plant a tree in their name instead. Planting trees reduces energy consumption by eliminating the need for materials that would be used for traditional gifts and wrapping paper, and is also great for the environment.
