Here’s what’s happening in worship for Holy Week April 14th-20th.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. For Holy Week, Taizé will be Stations of the Cross. This week’s after-Taizé class will be music on the labyrinth.
Maundy Thursday – Thursday 7:00 p.m.
This Holy Week Service will be held in the Sanctuary with Rev. Dr. Bush preaching. It commemorates the night on which Jesus Christ shared his Last Supper with his disciples before being arrested while praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Our lenten focus on African American spirituals will continue on this evening, with musical presentations of “I love the Lord who Heard My Cry” and “Let us Break Bread Together.”
Good Friday – Friday 12:00 p.m.
There will be a Good Friday service in the Chapel with Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy preaching.
Good Friday at St. James AME Church – 12:00 p.m.
Rev. Dr. Bush will preach as part of the “Seven Last Words” Good Friday service at St. James AME Church (444 Lincoln Ave., 15206) preaching on the second word from the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” from Luke 23:43.
Good Friday – Friday 7:00 p.m.
There will be a Good Friday Tenebrae Service in the Sanctuary with Rev. Heather Shoenewolf preaching.
Easter Vigil – Saturday 7:00 p.m.
The Easter Vigil service will begin on the Penn Avenue steps, then move into the Chapel and Sanctuary with the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan preaching.
Good Samaritan – Sunday 8:00 a.m.
The Good Samaritan Worship will now meet at the new EECM Community House (6014 Penn Circle North). This week will be a service of prayer and praise.
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week the Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach. While the good news of Christ’s resurrection will be shared, the worship space will not have Easter lilies out of respect for people allergic to plant aromas. Communion will be celebrated during this service and all are welcome to receive this sacrament.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 10:45 a.m.
Join us for our special Easter Sunday Worship in the Sanctuary. There will be a brass and organ prelude beginning at 10:45 a.m., followed by a communion service celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Preaching will be the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush, speaking on the Mark 16:1-8 gospel passage with a message titled, “Going Ahead of Us.” The Lenten focus on African American Spirituals will continue as there will be musical presentations of “O What a Beautiful City” and “Over My Head.”
Christian Education Classes
There will be no Sunday Church School classes Easter Sunday. Classes will resume Sunday, April 27.
