Here’s what’s happening in worship December 1-7, 2014.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. This week’s after-Taizé class is Christmas reflections.
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week is the second week of Advent. We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper and the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. This week is the second week of Advent, and we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper. The Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach.
Christian Education Classes
ELPC offers Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Go here for a list of our children and youth classes.
Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
Extending God’s Welcome, led by Mary Alice Lightle
From the earliest times, Christians have received the stranger as though they were receiving Jesus Himself! This gospel hospitality is awkward and risky, but it also can be transformative.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
“Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.” This verse from Psalm 89 implies that current life is one of separation. Yet, in the midst of such alienation, the psalmist proclaims a future time of restoration and wholeness. December may be winding down a calendar year of sorrows, but it also is Advent, the coming of God in Christ, a new church year, and new cycle of scripture readings. May justice, peace, faithfulness, and steadfast love be yours, all together. Come join us for these readings:
Isaiah 40:1-11; Psalms 85:1-2, 8-13; 2 Peter 3:8-15a; Mark 1:1-8.
Seekers (Room 234)
Admiration of “Our Mother Mary” in the Koran
In the Koran, Mary is reversed as the mother of Jesus. Two entire chapters of the Koran are dedicated to Mary, describing her life and the difficulties she had to endure for the pleasure of God, under conditions where women were unappreciated and belittled.
Sebnum Unlu will present an analysis of the beautiful and noble character of “Our Mother Mary” as described in the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Soul Food (Room 244)
Advent and Christmas Themes
We will be discussing Advent and Christmas themes using the writings of Thomas Merton.
YAM Sunday Class (Pastor’s Conference Room)
How do I reconcile that God is love and at the same time God has taken so many lives in the Bible? The fall theme of Scriptures that challenge us as Christians concludes as Pastor Randy leads this class focusing on violence and God in the Bible. Café Justo coffee served and childcare available in the nursery.
