Here’s what’s happening in worship January 13-19, 2015.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. This week’s after-Taizé class will be an extended time of prayer and music.
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy will preach this week.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. This week, the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach.
Christian Education Classes
ELPC offers Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Go here for a list of our children and youth classes.
Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
The Problem of Discipleship, led by Paul Seif, seminary intern
We will continue exploring Dr. John Burgess’ book, Discipleship: The Way of Jesus, by discussing chapter three, “The Problem of Discipleship.” We will re-imagine what it means to be a modern-day disciple of Christ, as we are confronted with social problems that can affect our ability to trust traditional systems of authority.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
Our Epiphany season readings include these words from the Apostle Paul, “For the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). The words were meant to encourage and to awaken a Christian community. Can we read Paul again in such ways at the beginning of 2015, especially during our time of social divisions and environmental decline? Other tests for January call us to a new consciousness, to move outward, free from anxieties. Come join us for these readings:
1 Samuel 3:1-20; Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; 1 Corinthians 6:12-20; John 1:43-51
Seekers (Room 234)
A Look at the Gospel, led by Tucker Ferda
We will consider how early Christians used this collection of ancient wisdom, teaching, and narrative in their proclamation about jesus and his significance. We will focus on the creative and subtle ways in which the Gospels shape the identity of Jesus via citations, allusions, and echoes of the Hebrew Bible/Septuagint.
Soul Food (Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room)
We are now meeting in two sections and both are discussing readings on the theme, “Traveling Your Road to Joy.”
