Here’s what’s happening in worship January 20-26, 2015.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. This week’s after-Taizé class is live music on the Labyrinth.
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach this week.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. This week, the Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach.
Christian Education Classes
ELPC offers Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Go here for a list of our children and youth classes.
Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
Dialog on Christian Discipleship, led by Paul Seif, seminary intern
As we continue our book discussion of Discipleship: The Way of Jesus, we will touch on portions of chapters on through four, focusing on Jesus’ teaching on discipleship as presented in the Gospels. Together, we will reflect on what Jesus’ instruction to “Follow me” might mean in the context of our everyday lives.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
Our Epiphany season readings include these words from the Apostle Paul, “For the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). The words were meant to encourage and to awaken a Christian community. Can we read Paul again in such ways at the beginning of 2015, especially during our time of social divisions and environmental decline? Other tests for January call us to a new consciousness, to move outward, free from anxieties. Come join us for these readings:
Jonah 3:1-5, 10; Psalm 62:5-12; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20.
Seekers (Room 234)
A Look at Paul’s Epistles, led by Tucker Ferda
We will further our discussion of “intertextuality” in the New Testament – that is, the nuanced ways the texts invoke, speak to, and transform the Scriptures of Israel. We will focus on the role of the Old Testament in New Testament texts besides the Gospels – in particular, Paul’s epistles. We will also discuss the theological significance of the inclusion of the Hebrew Bible in the Christian biblical canon, and what the upshot may be for dialogue between Jews and Christians in our day.
Soul Food (Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room)
We are now meeting in two sections and both are discussing readings on the theme, “Traveling Your Road to Joy.”
