Here’s what’s happening in worship November 10-16, 2014.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. This week’s after-Taizé class is an extended time of prayer and music.
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week Paul Seif will preach.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. The Rev. Brian Ellison, executive director of the Covenant Network, will be preaching as part of our celebration of Full Inclusion Sunday. Members of the Renaissance City Choir will also be here to provide special music.
Christian Education Classes
ELPC offers Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Go here for a list of our children and youth classes.
Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
November 16 and 23, Contemporaries will combine class with Seekers.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
At the edge of entering the promised land the people of Israel recognize that “it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors…out of the house of slavery.” November’s scripture readings also stand at an edge. They recall the Exodus experience and tell of Christ’s coming–companion stories in the grand arc of promise and fulfillment. Together, they illuminate the courage and work required to recognize and receive the grace of God’s reign.
Come join us on the journey through reading and reflection, this week on Judges 4:1-7; Psalm 123; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30.
Seekers (Room 234)
Early Development of Presbyterianism in Western Pennsylvania
The Presbyterians who came together as a congregation in East Liberty were among those who came into the upper Ohio Valley from east of the mountains and beyond the Atlantic. We will consider the origins of Presbyterianism in what became ELPC in the context of the early migration. Peter Gilmore, adjunct professor at Carlow and Carnegie Mellon Universities, will lead our class.
Soul Food (Room 244)
A Collection of Writings on Discernment
We will be discussing the latter chapters of Discernment by Henri Nouwen, and also selecting our next book.
