Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
Mission at ELPC
On Reformation Sunday, we will reflect on mission through the centuries and look at the ways in which we carry out our call to mission at ELPC. Michele Bossers, a member of the Mission Board, will lead our discussion.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
“Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness all the time” (Psalm 106:3). Like the beatitudes of Jesus this one seems as ironic and unachievable. Doing justice can be thankless, even life threatening. Listening, giving, and forgiving is hard work. And happiness appears to lie closer through other pursuits, often at the expense of others or the planet. Join us in October as we seek to understand justice through such formative scripture as the deliverance of the Israelites in Exodus, the apostle Paul’s understanding of salvation, and parables in Matthew’s gospel. God’s grace and law provide a foundation for both just ethics and deep joy.
Seek a mindshare of Christ with us as we reflect together, this week on Deuteronomy 34:1-12; Psalm 90:1-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew 22:34-46.

Learning to Walk in the Dark – week one of a two-week series
Pastor Heather will lead a study based on Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor. In her latest book, Taylor invites readers to explore the spiritual concepts of light and darkness, and to challenge our own tendency to equate all that is good with lightness, and all that is evil with darkness. Taylor reminds us that the God of light is the God of the night, too, and that it is often precisely in life’s “dark places” – times of uncertainty, loss, fear, confusion – when we encounter God in transforming ways. Taylor’s invitation to learn to walk in the darkness is an invitation to cultivate courage, trust in God, and to see the world in a new way, where we can sense God’s presence in all things.
