Here’s what’s happening in worship October 27-November 2, 2014.
Worship Services
Taizé – Wednesday 7:00 p.m.
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. This week’s after-Taizé class is Celebrations!
Journey Worship – Sunday 8:45 a.m.
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper and the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach.
Sanctuary Worship – Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper this week and the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach.
Christian Education Classes
ELPC offers Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Go here for a list of our children and youth classes.
Contemporaries (Second Floor Parlor)
The Problem of Discipleship
To become a disciple is to give one’s self up to a larger cause. Discipleship seems to undermine the freedom and autonomy modern people so greatly prize. ELPC Elder Peter Murray will lead us in a discussion of questions of authority and loyalties as we continue our series, Discipleship: The Way of Jesus.
Journey With Scripture (Second Floor Library)
At the edge of entering the promised land the people of Israel recognize that “it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors…out of the house of slavery.” November’s scripture readings also stand at an edge. They recall the Exodus experience and tell of Christ’s coming–companion stories in the grand arc of promise and fulfillment. Together, they illuminate the courage and work required to recognize and receive the grace of God’s reign.
Come join us on the journey through reading and reflection, this week on Joshua 3:7-17; Psalm 107:1-7,33-37; 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew 23:1-12.
Seekers (Room 234)
Learning to Walk in the Dark – week two of a two-week series
Pastor Heather will lead us as we conclude our two-part class on Barbara Brown Taylor’s book. We will explore the spiritual concepts of light and darkness, and challenge our tendency to equate good with lightness and evil with darkness. Taylor’s book invites us to cultivate courage, trust God, and see the world in a new way, where we can sense God’s presence in all things.
Soul Food (Room 244)
A Collection of Writings on Discernment
We will be discussing the latter chapters of Discernment by Henri Nouwen, and also selecting our next book.
