This Week in Worship: February 2–8, 2018

January 29, 2018

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Speak the Truth. Pastor Heather will preach from Ephesians 4:1–7,11–16.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Randy will preach from Mark 1:29–39, and his sermon will be titled “Public Witness, Private Faith.”

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Harambe Room
Africa and the Bible
Traditionally, biblical interpretation has been from a European perspective. Examples of Africa or Africans in the Bible usually have negative connotations and have even been used to justify slavery. We’ll consider the curse of Ham and the Ethiopian eunuch from an Afro-centric perspective with Pastor Patrice.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“The right to rule belongs to the Lord. He rules all nations.”—Psalm 22:28.
In the Lenten gospel readings, Jesus sets his face towards an encounter with the unjust rulers of his nation and their disdain for the least. Neither complicit nor complacent with the status quo, he proclaims God’s dominion by word and deed. Jesus claims God’s right to rule. May we—by the Spirit—be granted such assurance and action.

Join us for this week’s readings: Isaiah 40:21–31; Psalm 147:1–11, 20; 1 Corinthians 9:16–23; and Mark 1:29–39.

Seekers | Chapel
Empowering the Lives of Families and Youth in Homewood
Rashad Byrdsong, founder of the Community Empowerment Association, will tell us about his work with individuals, youth, and families in Homewood (our neighbors to the East). His work includes training and employment, equipping families with the tools toward self-determination, and working toward peace between gang members.”

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
The Book of Joy by Douglas Abrams
We will discuss The Book of Joy, with the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, led by Steve Evrard, Michelle Bard, and Liz Gonda.
