This Week in Worship: January 20–26, 2017

January 16, 2017

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click the “more” link for our Church School programming.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Starting Over. Pastor Randy will preach and his sermon will be based on Matthew 4:18–23.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Heather will preach from 1 Corinthians 1:10–18, and her sermon will be titled “When the Answers are Tough.”

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Our hour-long service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead this service of sung Taizé prayer. Stay afterward for Contemplative Prayer. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
Luke–Acts: The Early Church (part 1)
How has the ancient church inspired faithful Christian living through the centuries? Tucker Ferda will lead us as we consider how Christians have read Acts throughout the ages.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Epiphany can be a season of emerging consciousness and call. The apostle Paul writes, For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18). Such forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace can seem strange. Yet somehow, the reign of God is right at hand.

This week, our readings are Isaiah 9:1–4; Psalm 27:1, 4–9; 1 Corinthians 1:10–18; and Matthew 4:12–23. Our class will be facilitated by Jan Irvin.

Seekers | Room 234
The Prophet Amos (part 1)
The Book of Amos has been one of the least influential of the Biblical canon. It is seldom quoted or alluded to in Jewish or Christian writings, in spite of the fact that Amos is widely accepted as the earliest of the prophetic books, and marks the beginning of a unique tradition in the history of religion. Come explore Amos and explore the man and God’s message to Israel with the Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
This week, we will discuss Biblical texts focused on the theme “Feminine Strength—Human and Divine,” led by Joe Hajdu, Michelle Bard, and Steve Evrard.
