This Week in Worship: May 26–June 1, 2017

May 22, 2017

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click the “more” link for our Church School programming.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Transformed. Pastor Patrice will preach from Romans 12:1–8.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Randy will preach from John 17:1–11 and his sermon will be titled “Quiet Glory.”

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. Stay afterward for Contemplative Prayer. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
The Barmen Declaration: Reformation Refined Under Fire Part 2
Paul Seif will lead us as we witness how central themes at the heart of the Gospel—faith in “Christ Alone” and not in the nations and their leaders; grace for all God’s people and not a select few—are reimagined and reaffirmed within our century’s collective darkest hour—Europe under the Nazi threat.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor LibraryDo not let your hearts be troubled…In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.—John 14:1–2. In the risen Christ, followers hear of the assurance of eternal life so that they may be encouraged to patiently witness to the kingdom of God and the gospel—to journey in paths of justice, steadfast love, and faithfulness. Love crosses continents and careers to places unimagined. Join us as we reflect on Easter season scripture:

This week, our readings are: Acts 1:6–14; Psalm 68:1–10, 32–35; I Peter 4:12–14; 5:6–11; and John 17:1–11.

Seekers | Room 234
Making a New Life in America
We will hear from a panel of refugees about how they have made new lives in our country. Panelists will include a former Sudanese refugee who has been here for more than 15 years and is a strong example of how refugees go on to be successful citizens. We’ll also hear from a Rwandan refugee who arrived last year and has been extremely successful in her short time here. Bhutanese, Burmese, and Iraqi refugees also may join us. Our moderator will be Jaime M. Turek of Northern Area Multi-Service Center (NAMSC)—Community Assistance and Refugee Settlement.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
We will discuss a meditation by Richard Rohr on I Corinthians 13, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Shirley Fair, and Michele Bossers.
