This Week in Worship: May 8–14, 2015

May 6, 2015

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is It’s In There. The Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy will preach from Philippians 2:1–12.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach. His sermon will be entitled Making All Things New and is based on the same scriptures preached in 1935 at the church’s dedication: I Kings 8:26-30 and Revelation 21:2-7.

Taizé | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead worship. This week’s after-Taizé class will feature celebrations!

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
Enough: God’s Blessing in Abundance
Explore dimensions of what it means to have enough through parables of Jesus and other biblical references. Author Laura Mendenhall encourages students to look at what is really most important to have in life—God’s blessings, which are in abundance for us. This six-week study is part of our Being Reformed: Faith Seeking Understanding series.

This week, Peter Murray leads our lesson, Enough for Transformational Giving, based on Luke 12:13–31.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
May’s scripture readings begin with Jesus saying, “I have called you friends” (John 15:15) and they culminate with Pentecost in a rush of sound and varied speech. While there may be many ways of describing the Spirit, starting with abiding friendship is a fine way. Through friendship, love can move within and across boundaries, outside and within margins. Through friendship in Christ, the dimensions of love become unlimited, unfathomable. Join some friends for one of our classes:

This week, our readings are Acts 10:44–48; Psalm 98:1–9; 1 John 5:1–6; and John 15:9–17.

Seekers | Room 234
Hear from one of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan
During Sudan’s Civil War in the 1980s, over 20,000 Christian boys escaped by walking for five years across Africa to refuge in Kenya, each carrying their Bible. Benedict Killang was one of them. He is here to tell us about his experience, and how his faith supported him.
You are encouraged to watch the two moving segments by 60 Minutes below. Or, if you wish to see them on May 10, before Benedict talks, come to class at 9:10 am.

  • “The Lost Boys” part 1
  • “The Lost Boys” part 2

Soul Food | Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room
We will continue our sessions with Traveling Your Road to Joy. New participants are always welcome! This week, Michele Bossers and another class member will lead our lesson.
