This Week in Worship: November 17–23, 2017

November 13, 2017

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Blessed Community. Pastor Patrice will preach from Galatians 3:23–29.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. This week we will explore how much of scripture is poetic in nature and theology, as Pastor Randy preaches from Ruth 1:16–17; Song of Solomon 8:6–7; Micah 6:8; and John 1:1–5. His sermon will be titled “The Words of Life.”

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Harambe Room
Advent Through the Eyes of Those Who Waited: The Hebrew Prophets  Part 1 of 2
We begin our Advent study with the Prophet Isaiah. While these writings do not identify Jesus as the Messiah, they point the way to the Holy One from God. From them, we hear a range of emotions as the Israelites suffer defeat and eventually return to a ruined Jerusalem and a fallen temple.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Liminal: Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. We live a liminal existence (whether acknowledged or not)—our world is passing away. November’s scripture readings illuminate the courage and work required to recognize and receive the grace of God’s emerging reign. Come join us on the journey, reading and reflecting on crossing new thresholds.

This week, our readings are: Judges 4:1–7; Psalm 123; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11; and Matthew 25:14–30.

Seekers | Chapel
Operation Safety Net
Dr. Jim Withers meets his homeless patients on the streets of Pittsburgh. He created Operation Safety Net to minister to homeless people, and has been doing “street medicine” since 1992. In 2015, he was nominated as a Top 10 CNN Hero. He also has been spreading the practices of Operation Safety Net to other cities and countries.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
Join us as we begin discussing Richard Rohr’s Everything Belongs, chapter five, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Pam Napier-Barnes, and Steve Evrard.
