This Week in Worship: November 2–8, 2018

October 29, 2018

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Wisdom. Pastor Heather will preach. Communion will be served.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Heather will preach from Esther 4 and her sermon will be titled “Big Themes, Little Books: Powerful Voices.” Communion will be served. This week, we also will hold an All Saints remembrance for those who have died.

If you’re out of town and/or unable to join us for worship, follow us on Facebook to receive a notification when we go live so that you can watch this week’s sermon.

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | McKelvy Room
International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church
Through video, discussion and prayer, Rita Nordquist will lead us as we learn more about persecution in the Christian Church today and spend time in prayer together.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”—Revelation 4b–5

We seem to be awash in deceit or half-truths, and truth-seeking communities seem scarce as ideology rules. Yet our year’s readings end with deep wisdom and assurance by the One who is both trustworthy and just. One who comes in peace. Come join us as we listen for the Lord’s voice.

Join us for this week’s readings: Ruth 1:1–18; Psalm 146; Hebrews 9:11–14; and Mark 12:28–34.

Seekers | Garth Overlook Room
Hello Neighbor: Welcoming Pittsburgh’s Newest Refugees as Friends
Hello Neighbor is a non-profit organization that started in Pittsburgh in 2017, which welcomes refugees to the area and matches Pittsburgh families with refugee families in a mentoring relationship. So far, Hello Neighbor has matched 50 families! The program is launching its third cohort of families in November. Come and hear about the organization, how it was started, how this organization is welcoming the least of these, and how you can become involved, as families or individuals. Our discussion will be led by Kara Kimicata, program manager for Hello Neighbor.

Soul Food | Good Samaritan Room (G12)
We will conclude our discussion of chapter four of Surrender to Love by David Benner, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Steve Evrard, and Vivienne Selia.
