This Week in Worship: October 19–25, 2018

October 16, 2018

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Re-Building. Pastor Patrice will preach from Nehemiah 2:1–6, 11–12, 17–18.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Randy will preach from Jeremiah 32:1–15, and his sermon will be titled “Risky Business.” We also will celebrate our 25-year partnership with Balaka (Malawi) Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), and there will be a special celebration after worship.

If you’re out of town and/or unable to join us for worship, follow us on Facebook to receive a notification when we go live so that you can watch this week’s sermon.

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | McKelvy Room
Theology for Presbyterians: Jesus Christ
We confess Jesus as the “Christ” and “the Word made flesh,” one person with two natures: divine and human. How does the cross embody our faith and empower us to live faithfully?

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”—Job 42:3

Our readings continue exploring the wisdom tradition in scripture. After contending with friends and God through a period of extensive suffering, Job lets go of some traditional perceptions about God. Radical new images of God and a far richer multipolar world emerge. Likewise, our world passes away—the new can emerge. Join us on this journey.

Join us for this week’s readings: Job 38:1–7 (34–41); Psalm 104:1–9, 24, 35c; Hebrews 5:1–10; and Mark 10:35–45.

Seekers | Garth Overlook Room
Pagans, Jews, and Christians in the Roman Empire: How and Why Did Christianity Triumph?  | Part 1
In traditional histories of Western culture, the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire is understood as a triumph over Judaism and paganism that happened rapidly across the great expanse of the Roman Empire. The reasons for this often claim that the many gods of the time had a proclivity to get angry on a whim, and the absence of true spirituality and social morality in these other beliefs. Renewed methods of research, archaeological discoveries, and the elimination of Christian bias from history books show that there is no historical evidence for those claims.

This week, our topic is: The Worlds of Ancient Judaism and Ancient Paganism.

Soul Food | Good Samaritan Room (G12)
We will conclude our discussion of chapter three of Surrender to Love by David Benner, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Linda Harrington, Michele Bossers, and Steve Evrard.
