This Week in Worship: September 13–19, 2019

September 9, 2019

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, 8:45 am

An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Mirror Images. Pastor Randy will preach from Luke 15:1–10.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, 11 am

Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Randy will preach from Luke 15:1–10, and his sermon will be titled “Found and Lost.”

If you’re out of town and/or unable to attend worship, join us in spirit. Subscribe to our YouTube channel or follow us on Facebook and stream our service.

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, 7 pm

Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Exploring the Kairos Prison Ministry
Kairos, signifying God’s special appointed time, is also the name chosen by the Kairos Prison Ministry. While Kairos Inside ministers to those who are incarcerated, Kairos Outside is a weekend retreat for women who have loved ones who are incarcerated. Jesus particularly asked us to care for these people, so join us to learn about the powerful resources that are available for them. Presented by Michael McGraw of the Kairos Inside ministry.

Journey With Scripture | Highland Room

September readings explore the book of the prophet Jeremiah, who proclaims a different message from the prevailing ideology and political powers in Israel. This gets him imprisoned! We will read the whole letter of Philemon—the apostle Paul’s shortest letter (from prison), with its controversial subject of slavery. 1 Timothy is the first of two Pastoral letters that reflect a developing, perhaps more orthodox, church setting. Finally, Jesus tells unique, life giving parables that are found only in Luke’s gospel. Come join the journey of reading and reflecting on scripture.

Join us for this week’s readings: Jeremiah 4:11–12, 22–28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12–17; and Luke 15:1–10.

Seekers | Garth Overlook Room

Experiencing God Despite Doubts  Part 1
We all want to experience God in our lives. We all have doubts. Do our doubts get in the way of experience? Does experience do away with doubts? The Rev. Dr. Graham Standish will explore how our doubts actually help us experience God more in life, and ways to tangibly experience God so that our doubts can lead us down new paths of discovery.

The Rev. Dr. Standish is executive director of Samaritan Counseling, Guidance, Consulting. He is the author of eight books on spirituality and congregational transformation, an adjunct professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, a spiritual director, and clergy coach. In addition, he served as a pastor for 22 years at an innovative church that pioneered a spiritual approach to church.

Soul Food | Good Samaritan Room

This week, we will discuss the introduction of our new book, Inspired—Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again, by Rachel Held Evans. We will be joined by our Young Adult Ministry.
