This Week in Worship: September 16–22, 2016

September 12, 2016

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click the “more” link for our Church School programming.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Back on Track. Pastor Heather will preach.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Heather will preach from Esther 4:5–14, and her sermon will be titled “TED Talks: When the Personal is Political.”

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead this service of sung Taizé prayer. Stay afterward for Contemplative Prayer.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
Quantum Theology: Part 1
Our understanding of the universe is rapidly changing, thanks to new technology available for space telescopes and astrophysics. Join Pastor Randy and Arthur Kosowsky, Pitt professor of physics and astronomy, for a dialogue and discussion about the ways our vibrant, expansive universe requires an equally vibrant, expansive, and creative theology about God our Creator. We will meet in the Small Dining Room this week, and be joined by the Seekers class.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
The Pharisees criticize Jesus: This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. The apostle Paul writes: I am grateful to Christ Jesus, our Lord, who has strengthened me, and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a person of violence. September’s readings describe a hospitable God who encourages us to take hold of a peace filled and just life. Join us as we reflect upon these Lectionary readings:

This week, our readings are Jeremiah 8:18–9:1; Psalm 79:1–9; 1 Timothy 2:1–7; and Luke 16:1–13.

Seekers | Room 234
We will join the Contemporaries class in the Small Dining Room.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
We will discuss the first chapter of our new text, The Gift of Being Yourself, by David Benner. New participants are always welcome, and copies of the book will be available.
