This Week in Worship: November 3–9, 2017

October 30, 2017

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Blessed Community. Pastor Heather will preach from 1 John 3:1–3. We also will celebrate Communion.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Heather will preach from 1 John 3:1–3, and her sermon will be titled “In Good Company.” We also will celebrate Communion.

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Harambe Room
The Four Freedoms: Freedom from Want  Part 3
In this class, Ron Stone will focus on New Testament generosity, contemporary social gospel emphases in our PC(USA), and the obstacles to reducing poverty in a sinful world. Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed the freedom from want for all people of the world. Is that a possibility?

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Liminal: Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. We live a liminal existence (whether acknowledged or not)—our world is passing away. November’s scripture readings illuminate the courage and work required to recognize and receive the grace of God’s emerging reign. Come join us on the journey, reading and reflecting on crossing new thresholds.

This week, our readings are: Joshua 3:7–17; Psalm 107:1–7,33–37; 1 Thessalonians 2:9–13; and Matthew 23:1–12.

Seekers | Chapel
500th Anniversary of the Reformation: John Calvin and the Reformed Tradition
Five hundred years ago, on Oct. 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral. But not all who wanted a break with Rome agreed with him. A significant alternative to Lutheranism developed around the writing and practice associated with John Calvin. We will hear about this from Dr. Peter Gilmore, a university history lecturer and elder at Sixth Presbyterian Church.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
Join us for a beginning discussion of Richard Rohr’s Everything Belongs, chapter four, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Yamuna Morgenstern, and Linda Harrington.
