This Week in Worship: October 20–26, 2017

October 17, 2017

Here’s what’s happening in worship this week. Click on “more” for details about this week’s Church School classes.

Worship Services

Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Tolerance. Pastor Heather will preach from Mark 5:21–24, 35–43.

Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. Pastor Patrice will preach from Acts 16:16–24 and her sermon will be titled “Suffer the Children.” We also will celebrate the Children’s Sabbath, with the theme: Moving Forward with Hope: Love and Justice for Every Child.

Taizé Prayer Service | Wednesday, at 7 pm
Led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan, our hour-long Taizé service includes sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. Stay afterward for Contemplative Prayer. If you’re unable to participate in person, join our live stream on your computer or mobile device.

Christian Education Classes

We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.

Contemporaries | Harambe Room
The Four Freedoms: Religion Part 2
Professor Ron Stone will discuss what “freedom of speech” means in an era of fake news, disputes over racist symbols, and attempts to define and ban hate speech.

Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
“Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob”—Psalm 99:4. Join us as we seek to understand God’s love of justice and equity: through the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness, psalms of praise and confession, parables of Jesus, and the apostle Paul’s encouragement to new followers in Christ.

This week, our readings are: Exodus 33:12–23; Psalm 99; 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10; and Matthew 22:15–22.

Seekers | Chapel
Ahmadiyya, a Different Kind of Islam
Women from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community (of Wilkinsburg) will tell us about their beliefs and how they differ from other Muslim sects. They believe in a messiah and have been persecuted by other Muslims.

Soul Food | Third Floor Music Room
Join us for a beginning discussion of Richard Rohr’s Everything Belongs, chapter three, led by the Rev. Joe Hajdu, Pam Napier-Barnes, and Liz Gonda.

Young Adults | Second Floor Parlor
Together with our senior high youth, we will focus on the topic of race as we study the Word and build relationships with our future young adults.
