Spotlight: Humane Action Pittsburgh

April 12, 2016

Humane Action Pittsburgh LogoHumane Action Pittsburgh is a coalition of citizen lobbyists dedicated to advancing animal protection through legislation and policy.

In just 2 hours, you will learn to do more for animals than most people ever will. As Brian Bonsteel, president of Humane Action Pittsburgh and ELPC member says, “Animal abuse is something we cannot rescue our way out of, we need to legislate it.” Humane Action Pittsburgh gives you tools to communicate with your legislators and ask them to vote for laws that would help animals.

Every six weeks, Humane Action Pittsburgh meets on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at East Liberty Presbyterian Church.

Meetings and topics for the first half of 2016Humane Action Pittsburgh meets at East Liberty Presbyterian Church and organizes to lobby legislators on animal rights issues. Brian Bonsteel is the president.

2 cups chopped onions, about 3 medium onions
2 cups celery, about 1 medium celery bunch
2 cups chopped peppers, about 2 peppers any color
1 can (40 oz) dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (15 oz) black beans
1 can (15 oz) cannellini or white kidney beans
1 jar (32 oz) Prego Traditional Italian Sauce
1 can (28 oz) Hunt’s diced tomatoes
1 can (14 oz) Muir Glen diced tomatoes with chipotle peppers
5 tbsp olive oil
12-16 oz Soy chorizo seitan*

Seasoning

2 tbsp Italian Seasoning
2 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp black pepper
1 tbsp salt
2 tbsp minced fresh garlic

  1. Chop onions, celery and peppers. Drain and rinse the red, black and white beans. Set aside
  2. In a large 5 quart pot, place 5 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and 12 -16 oz of Chorizo Seitan. Lightly brown for less than 1 minute.
  3. Add peppers, onions and celery. Stir and mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes, just enough to soften the vegetables.
  4. Add Prego sauce, Hunt’s diced tomatoes, Muir Glen diced tomatoes with chipotle peppers, and stir.
  5. Add the red, black and white beans.
  6. Season to taste. Use your preference of level for the seasoning mix.
