Cathedral Concerts 2019–2020
East Liberty Presbyterian Church is pleased to announce a series of seven diverse concerts are slated for its 2019–2020 Cathedral Concerts season.
Now in its ninth year, the series celebrates an eclectic mix of vocal and instrumental performances in the grandeur of ELPC, which was designed by renowned architect Ralph Adams Cram. Concerts are free, unless otherwise noted. A freewill offering is accepted.

Deanna Witkowski Trio
Sunday, September 29 | 3 pm*
The season kicks off with an exciting afternoon of jazz featuring the Deanna Witkowski Trio in the Sanctuary. Known for her thrilling performances that combine virtuosity and heart, Witkowski returns to Pittsburgh after her recent performances at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Witkowski’s surprising sound is accessible yet unmistakably her own.
The New York City-based trio—comprised of pianist-composer-vocalist Deanna Witkowski, bassist Daniel Foose, and drummer Scott Latzky—will perform a mix of Brazilian, jazz, classical, and sacred music.
*The Deanna Witkowski Trio also will provide special music during our Sanctuary worship service on Sunday, September 29, 11 am.
“Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré
Sunday, November 3 | 3 pm
The ELPC Chancel Choir will present Gabriel Fauré’s serene and uplifting Requiem, accompanied by strings, horns, harp, and organ in the Sanctuary. The seven parts of Requiem include some of the most beautiful melodies Fauré ever composed, including the sublime Pie Jesu for soprano solo.
Sweet Jazz with Mike Tomaro
Saturday, November 9 | 7 pm
Pittsburgh jazz legend Mike Tomaro’s concert will follow a “Sweet Jazz” theme in the Social Hall. Together with his combo, Tomaro will perform jazz favorites while the audience enjoys sweet desserts. Tomaro—an accomplished saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator—currently serves as director of the Jazz Studies program at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University.
Christmas in East Liberty
Friday, December 13 | 7:30 pm
The season continues in the ELPC Sanctuary with “Christmas in East Liberty”—the series’ most highly anticipated concert each year. The Brass Roots, conductor Lance LaDuke, organist Dr. Edward Alan Moore, and the ELPC Chancel Choir will combine to perform a mix of holiday favorites for brass, organ, choir, and the audience.
Chatham Baroque
Saturday, February 15 | 8 pm
Pittsburgh’s premiere baroque ensemble returns to perform their annual trio program in the intimacy of the Chapel. Comprised of Scott Pauley, theorbo; Patricia Halverson, viola de gamba; and Andrew Fouts, baroque violin—Chatham Baroque captivates local, national, and international audiences with thrillingly vivid seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music. Carnegie Mellon University Wind Ensemble

Saturday March 28 | 4 pm
The Carnegie Mellon University Wind Ensemble will join organist Dr. Edward Alan Moore to fill the ELPC Sanctuary with the majestic and unique sounds of winds, brass, percussion, and organ. Music for wind ensemble and organ is not often heard in a spectacular setting like this!
Featured on the program will be a new composition for wind ensemble and organ by Pittsburgh composer Nancy Galbraith.
Movies, Movies, Movies!
Friday, May 22 | 7:30 pm
The season concludes as The Brass Roots and organist Dr. Edward Alan Moore team up with guest conductor, arranger, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra trombonist James Nova to deliver a sonic spectacular, themed “Movies, Movies, Movies!” The exciting program will feature iconic themes from Batman and Beetlejuice by legendary composer and four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman. The audience will experience these well-known melodies like they’ve never been heard before in ELPC’s beautiful Sanctuary.
